Week2: Math + Arts

This week's materials give me an insight that mathematics actually intertwines arts and science in a complex way. Mathematic can be employed to enhance the understanding of arts and science, and verse visa. For example, when I studied the multiple integration of irregular shapes under non-horizontal planes, I realized the importance of drawing the corresponding graphs. In the picture below, it could be comparatively different to deduce the meaning of formula by itself. The figures, however, give more intuitive understanding of calculate the volume under the plane.
Among those artists, I am mostly intrigued by Robert J. Lang's Origami, which combines the beauty of arts and the techniques of math.  Lang uses mathematical theory and code to design Origami states. For example, TreeMaker utilizes many algorithms for the origami design, incorporated a powerful numerical optimization code. The mathematical theories of symmetry lays the foundation of the code to build the TreeMaker. And TreeMaker helps to design Origami. The interaction of Mathematics, science and arts are shown in Lang's artist product, which I found the most interesting.

In addition, there are several well-known artists who employ mathematical techniques in their arts. Leonardo De Vinci used the golden ratios, optical principles of the eye and pyramidal lines, which applied in the Mona Lisa and Last Supper. Leon Battista Alberi regarded mathematics as the common ground to the arts and the sciences and applied this concepts in his architecture. Charles Csuri uses the random elements are designed into the algorithms which create the intersections of planes, which really corresponds to my math homework of making different planes over one graph.  Moreover, it is amazing for me to realize that there was no concept of nothing before the Descartes notices the symbol representing 0 in Indian concept.

After I watched the lecture and finished the readings this week, the juxtaposition of mathematics, art and science becomes complex in my mind. As a math major student, I didn't even realize that mathematics interrelates arts in such a significant way by showing in the graph and figures. They are seemingly separated disciplines as Victoria Vesna pinpoints that education system works to the genius or reduce our focus or perspective of what we see. However, mathematics intertwines with arts and science, thus providing the solid foundation to develop arts and science.
